Musk electric car company has surged in value this year and hit a market value of $700bn (£516bn) for the first time on Wednesday pushing the founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos to second on the list who had been the richest person since 2017 and is currently worth about $184 billion.
The world’s celebrated entrepreneur and the man behind Tesla Inc and SpaceX surpass passed Bill Gates in November 2020 to become the second-richest person in the world after he gained more wealth over the past 12 months than Bill Gates’ entire net worth of $132 billion.
The South African American grew his net worth by $25.1 billion in 2021 alone and in the last 12 hours his net worth rose by $13.6 billion after exceeding analysts’ expectations with Tesla production for 2020 despite COVID-19 lockdown and other limitations.
Musk saw his personal wealth skyrocket in 2020 to the tune of more than $150 billion, in large part because he owns a lot of Tesla stock, about 20 percent of the company.
Tesla’s shares were recently trading at about $790, up more than 4% in trading Thursday. The company’s market value has grown to $737.6 billion.
