NCC orders telecom operators to block SIM cards without NIN

Nigeria Government has order telecommunications operators in the country to block all SIM cards not registered with National Identification Numbers (NIN)within two weeks.

Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,Director of Public Affairs Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, stresed that any telecom operators that failed to comply with the directive risked outright withdrawal of its licence or heavy penalty.

This was the fallout of the meeting of key stakeholders in the communications industry presided over by Dr Isa Pantami, minister of Communications and Digital Economy, on Tuesday.

At the meeting had in attendance the chief executive officers and management of the NCC and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Others at the meeting include the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), as well as the CEOs and management staff of all service providers in the industry.

Stakeholders agreed that urgent drastic measures have now become inevitable to improve the integrity and transparency of the SIM registration process.

Following decisions were taken for immediate implementation by all Network Operators: Affirmation of the earlier directive to totally suspend registration of NEW SIMs by all operators.
