World’s highest-earning female athlete:Naomi Osaka tops Serena Williams

Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has displaced US rival Serena Williams to become the world’s highest-paid female athlete.

According to Forbes magazine, Japanese tennis star Osaka, 22 made £30.7m in prize money and endorsements over the past 12 months.

That was £1.15m more than the amount earned by 38-year-old Serena Williams. Both shattered the previous single-year earnings record of £24.4m set in 2015 by Russia’s Maria Sharapova.

Osaka’s earnings also broke the record for the highest in a single year by a female athlete, eclipsing Maria Sharapova’s record of $29.7 million in 2015.

Japanese tennis star turned pro in 2014 and has so far snagged five career titles, including two Grand Slams titles at the 2018 US Open and 2019 Australian Open respectively, and WTA’s prestigious Indian Wells title.
