The European Union Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell on Saturday called on the United States to “reconsider” the decision to cut ties with the World Health Organization over its handling of the covid-19 pandemic.
The Union said, the participation and support of all is required and very much needed….We urge the US to reconsider its announced decision.”
This was made know after United States president Donald trump decision to sever ties with the Geneva-based body.
Trump has been expressing anger at the World Health Organisation for weeks over what he has portrayed as an inadequate response to the initial outbreak of the coronavirus in China’s Wuhan province late last year.
Trump said the US would be “redirecting” the money to “other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs,” without providing specifics.
The US is the largest source of financial support for the WHO, and its exit is expected to significantly weaken the organisation.
