Chinese President, Xi Jinping on Monday announced that Beijing will contribute two billion dollars over the next two years for the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Xi Jinping said, the money is not only earmarked for health measures, but also as developmental aid for affected countries.
Xi urged other countries to increase their funding to the WHO.
The WHO should lead the global response,’’ he said about the UN agency that is facing a shortfall because the United States has suspended its financial contributions.
Beijing said any vaccines developed against the disease by China will be made a public good.
China’s foreign ministry has said it was premature to immediately launch an investigation into the origins and spread of the coronavirus.
Spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters during a daily briefing that the vast majority of countries in the world believe the pandemic is not yet over.
