Champions League: Bayern Munich crunch Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge worst for 34 years
Bayern Munich beat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in play that place the blue within touching distance of the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The Blues are now on course to record their worst home season for 34 years. As Serge Gnabry scored twice in quick succession after half-time, before Alphonso Davies seared down the left to set up Robert Lewandowski to make it Chelsea’s worst-ever home defeat in Europe.
The defeat was Chelsea’s eighth at home this season in all competitions, the highest such figure the Blues have recorded since the 1985-86 campaign.
Chelsea had miserable night as Marcos Alonso sent off late on following a VAR review after clashing with Lewandowski.
Bayern boasted 63 per cent of ball possession, dominating play. Chelsea’s Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread now required to win by a margin of four goals or force a 3-3 draw.
All the goals came in the second half, as Gnabry’s brace was followed by a Robert Lewandowski finish for his 11th Champions League goal this season.
The second leg is in Munich on March 18.Frank Lampard will be without Jorginho and Marcos Alonso for the second leg
