The Glasgow Rangers manager and Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, has backed defender, Virgil van Dijk to win this year’s Ballon D’ Or ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking after Rangers’ Europa League 2-2 draw with Feyenoord on Thursday, Gerrard was quoted by Goal as saying when asked by a Dutch reporter if Van Dijk should win the 2019 Ballon D’ Or: “Yes, 100%.
“I’m Messi’s number one fan, for sure. I love the player. Obscene numbers in his game in terms of assists and goals. I’m definitely a Messi fan, in the gang.
“But if you speak about consistency from one player over a year, who wins the European Cup and is without a doubt faultless in each and every performance, that ability you deserve to win the Ballon d’Or.”
Messi is the favored to win a sixth Ballon d’Or, after he led Barcelona to the successful defence of their La Liga title.
It will be fascinating to see who wins the award in the cease and if the Dutchman does win, he will become the first defender to declare the honour on account that Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
