Jussie Smollett will not be featuring in the season 6 of Empire series. This is according to Fox Networks which stated that his character Jamal will not be returning to the Lyon family.
Smollett was indicted on 16 felony counts for allegedly filing a false police report, claiming he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack. All the charges were dropped and Smollett has maintained his innocence, but both his future with “Empire” and the show’s future had been in question.
“By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season 6, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire.’”
A spokesman for Jussie Smollet stated: “We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on ‘Empire’ in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open. Most importantly he is grateful to Fox and ‘Empire’ leadership, cast, crew and fans for their unwavering support.”
Last week, Smollett’s fellow co-stars including Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, as well as the show’s creator Lee Daniels, wrote an open letter to Fox and Disney executives asking for Smollett to be brought back.
“Together, as a united front, we stand with Jussie Smollett and ask that our co-star, brother and friend be brought back for our sixth season of ‘Empire.
