Jussie Smollett to be sued by City of Chicago for $130k police overtime spent on investigation

The City of Chicago is set to sue Empire actor, Jussie Smollett after alleged hate-crime hoaxer to recoup the $130,000 it spent in carrying out the investigation into the actor’s police report.

Mr. Smollett has refused to reimburse the City of Chicago after a bill of $130,106.15 was given for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on January 29, 2019.

The city’s lawsuit could have collateral consequences that might be more damaging to pay than the punitive financial damages he’d have to pay if the suit is successful.

‘If the amount is not timely paid, a violation of the false statement ordinance imposes a fine of at least $500.00 up to $1,000, plus up to three times the amount of damages Chicago sustains as a result of the violation.

The Law Department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Once it is filed, the Law Department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr. Smollett’s L.A. based legal team,”.

Representatives for Smollett have not yet commented on the matter or whether Smollett intends to pay the investigative fees or not.
