The mother of the 29-year-old pilot Mr Yared Getachew who was in charge of the doomed Ethiopian plane has at last opened up about his child’s last message to her.
The mother, Dr Rayan Shapi, uncovered that she last addressed the pilot, Yared Getachew, directly before he began the adventure that killed 157 people.
‘I am coming to Nairobi. I have forgotten my phone, but we will talk once I get there,” these were the last words Mr Yared Getachew, the pilot of the ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 uttered to his mother as he prepared to steer the aircraft for the less than two-hour flight to Nairobi.
Little did the 29-year-old pilot know that he would never live to see his family, given that minutes after take-off his plane developed technical problems and crashed six minutes later as he attempted to make a turnaround and land back at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.
The half Kenyan and Ethiopian had worked in the aviation industry for more than 10 years and climbed through the corporate ladder since his years as a cadet to sit among the senior captains.
“Yared’s brilliance and huge ambitions was clearly shown by the fact that at 29, he had already grown to the rank of senior captain
According to Ethiopian Airline, the 29-year-old pilot had an excellent flying record. For the time that he has been working with the Ethiopian Airlines he has never been involved in any mishap.
Flying from Addis Ababa to Nairobi was a trip he had done so many times before, and even for his family this was nothing to worry about given that he had flown for more than 8000 hours as he charted a path in aviation.
