Former cardinal and archbishop of Washington,Theodore E. McCarrick has been expelled by Pope Francis after the Vatican found him guilty of s*xually abusing minors.
The Vatican’s move makes McCarrick appears to be the first time that a cardinalNhas been ousted from the priesthood specifically because of s*x abuse.
An earlier Vatican hearing had found him guilty of soliciting for s*x while hearing confession “with the aggravating factor of the abuse of power” and ordered his “dismissal from the clerical state”.
The defrocking is the “most severe form of canonical punishment for a cleric” within the Roman Catholic Church,It is also the first time an American cardinal has been removed from the priesthood.
Mr. McCarrick, now 88,will never again be allowed to go about as a priest, and is taboo to celebrate sacraments except to grant absolution for sins to a person close to death. Only excommunication is a more severe punishment.
Now that he has been defrocked, Mr. McCarrick loses church-sponsored housing and financial benefits. Theodore McCarrick is a clear signal that abuse will not be tolerated. No bishop, no matter how influential, is above the law of the church.”
