R. Kelly and Sony part ways as pressure mounts over Surviving series
R.Kelly and his label, Sony subsidiary RCA Records not in business they have agreed to part ways first time in decades .
R. Kelly’s been with Sony since the early days of his career, and has been under contract with its subsidiary label, RCA, since 2012.
Several artists like Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Ciara have separated themselves from Kelly by pulling their collaboration with him from streaming services while others have denounced him.
The split with Sony comes after a Lifetime docuseries chronicled years of sexual misconduct allegations against Kelly; “Surviving R. Kelly”
On Wednesday,Protest led by social justice organizations Ultraviolet and Color of Change the national women’s organization UltraViolet commissioned a plane to fly a banner reading “RCA/SONY: DROP SEXUAL PREDATOR R. KELLY” over the Sony Music offices in Culver City with demonstrators holding signs with messages such as “RCA Drop Kelly!” and “Black Girls Matter.”
Sony was also feeling the pressure with protests outside its offices in L.A. and NYC.
“We are deeply disappointed that in light of the comprehensive allegations of sexual abuse made public by the Surviving R. Kelly documentary, that RCA Records and Spotify continue to choose abusers over the survivors of their crimes,” Karin Roland, the group’s chief campaigns officer, said.
