Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi wins DR Congo presidential vote

Opposition candidate, Felix Tshisekedi has be declared winner by Democratic Republic of Congo’s electoral commission on Thursday in tightly contested presidential vote.

Tshisekedi won with 38.57 percent of more than 18 million ballots cast, Corneille Nangaa, head of the election commission said

Though result was rejected by rival Martin Fayulu, who was backed by opposition heavyweights and Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, can contest the results before Congo’s constitutional court, which has 10 days to hear and rule on any challenges.had led in polling prior to the December 30 vote.

The result could lead to the country’s first democratic transfer of power since independence from Belgium in 1960, with President Joseph Kabila is stepping down after 18 years in office.
