Naomi Osaka wins Australian Melborun Open make her world number one female tennis player

The Japanese youngster Naomi Osaka has won the Australian Open in the wake of beating Czech Petra Kvitova 7-6 (2) 5-7 6-4 in a dramatic final.

The new world number one is the first Asian man or woman to top the singles rankings as Melbourne Park erupted in thunderous cheers, it was a cathartic moment for 21-year-old Osaka, whose breakthrough Grand Slam win at Flushing Meadows was marred by boos in the wake of losing finalist Serena Williams’ tirade at the umpire.

The 21-year-old said after collecting the trophy,“I felt like I was in a state of shock through the entire trophy presentation,” .

“Honestly, when I was playing and I heard the crowd was for both of us I was very happy but at the same time I was trying to focus on the match.”

Just last September, Osaka was decreased to tears when the crowd booed her after a dubious US Open last in which Serena Williams lost her cool. The hard-battled triumph made Osaka the principal Asian, male or female, to hold the world’s best positioning, assuming control from Romania’s Simona Halep.

Osaka is the youngest woman to win back-to-back majors since Martina Hingis in 1998 and the youngest number one since Caroline Wozniacki in 2010.
