Kanye West has donated $73,540 to the campaign of Chicago Mayoral candidate Amara Enyia on Monday.
The donation was to enable Enyia payoff debt to the Illinois State Board of Elections following her brief run for mayor in 2015 as reported by Chicago Sun-Times .
It was reported that she never closed her campaign account after dropping the bid and was slapped with fines for not filing quarterly campaign finance reports required by law.
West’s contribution comes days after fellow Chicago musician Chance the Rapper, who has sharply criticized West for his friendly relationship with President Trump, formally endorsed Enyia.
Enyia is gaining national attention which could help elevate her name recognition back home in Chicago. There are over a dozen people running to replace outgoing Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.
“The Amara Enyia campaign thanks Chicago native, Kanye West, for his generous action,” owning to the fact that the progressive candidate had until Dec. 20 to pay the fine in order to get on the Chicago mayoral ballot for next year.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former Obama chief of staff, announced in September that he would not seek a third term in office next year.
