The FIFA Golden Ball at the Russia World Cup and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić beat off competition from former Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah to win UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for 2017/18.
The Croatian superstar who had a stellar year for his club and country, was also named Midfielder of the Season for the second successive year at a ceremony which took place in Monaco this afternoon.
The midfielder picks up the award after guiding Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League title and inspiring Croatia to the World Cup final – where they lost to France.
Modrić signed for Real Madrid six years ago from Tottenham Hotspur and initially struggled to make an impact in Spain.
Luka Modrić was awarded the Golden Ball as the most outstanding player at the 2018 World Cup. The latest award also places the Croatian midfielder in pole position to break the duopoly grip of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the Ballon d’Or.
Modric received 313 points in the voting to finish ahead of three-time winner Ronaldo (223pts)Salah came third (134pts) after a stellar first season at Anfield.
Cristiano Ronaldo who now plays for Juventus won the Champions League’s best forward award with Real Madrid after becoming the top scorer in the competition for a sixth-year running
Real Madrid star, Sergio Ramos was voted as the competition’s best defender last season, while his teammate, Keylor Navas was named as the best goalkeeper of last season’s Champions League with Real Madrid.
Women’s Player of the Year was given to Pernille Harder (Wolfsburg & Denmark), who beat Ada Hegerberg (Lyon) and Amandine Henry (Portland Thorns/Lyon & France) to the award.
