Aretha Franklin ‘Queen of Soul’,dies at 76 after battle with cancer

The queen of soul Aretha Franklin died in her Detroit home under hospice care and surrounded by family after diagnosed with cancer in 2010.

In a statement by her family, “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart.

“We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins knew no bounds.”

Aretha Franklin died due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit,” the family statement said.

She was well known in her hit songs like “Respect” and “Natural Woman.”. had 17 Top Ten US chart hits over a music career spanning seven decades.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W Bush in 2005, when she was saluted for “capturing the hearts of millions of Americans”
