The tale of Aisha Yau sound spathetic, having lost her whole family to herdsmen-farmer conflicts in Taraba State, however her malicious plot over her child far exceeds whatever situation she may have undergone.
It was a moment of grief and sorrow for many eyewitnesses, especially mothers in Kaduna State, recently, when the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hafsat Baba Muhammed, rescued a three-month-old baby boy from his mother, Aisha Yau, who was apparently traumatized owing to herdsmen invasion, killings and crises that had rocked Taraba State.
Aisha, who stays under the bridge in Kawo, Kaduna North Local Government Area, kept her baby under the wheel of a trailer, with a deliberate intention to crush the baby to death.
An eye witness said the 20-year old single mother insisted that she was going to kill the baby in spite of the efforts of good Samaritans. She maintained that it was over for the baby and prevented those around the scene from removing him from underneath the wheels. She continually persuaded the driver of the truck to start the engine and run over the child.
Fortunately, a passerby quickly drew the attention of a commissioner to the incident, who in company of other top government functionaries rescued the child at about 11am on Thursday.
Although, the lady could not explain how she found herself in Kaduna; she noted that it was the crisis in her state, Taraba, that scattered her family members without a trace of any of them since over a year.
According to her,the miserable situation threw her off balance.
On her identity, she told Nigerian Pilot Weekend, “My name is Aisha Yau and I am 20 years old. I am from Taraba State, but can’t find any of my family after the crisis that occurred in our community some time ago’’.
According to her,”I do not know how I got to Kaduna. But when I came, one of my suitors, though I don’t know his name, but only his shop in Kasuwan Baici here in Kaduna, got me pregnant but he denied the pregnancy and refused to take care of me and the baby. So, I want to kill the baby to save myself from shame,” she said.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after taking custody of Aisha and the baby, the commissioner of women affairs stated that she has directed the social department in her ministry to take the young woman to the hospital for medical examination and treatment before repatriating her and the child back to Taraba State.
“I was in a meeting when I got a distress call that a young woman was about to kill her own child. Fortunately for me, I had some people with me and that was how we rushed to Kawo.
“On getting there, she was still waiting for the driver of the truck to move so he can crush the baby. We had to tactically move her away while we rescued the baby.
“We have both of them with us. We will take her to the hospital tomorrow for possible rehabilitation because she is not that bad in her sense of reasoning. By the time she is stabilized, we will communicate with the Ministry of Women Affairs in Taraba State to see the possibility of reuniting Aisha with her family.
The commissioner said”she wanted the child dead because the man she claimed to be responsible for the baby boy was not ready to take care of the child, hence her plan to kill himand move on with her live which is quite unfortunate,” she added.
