Time magazine has chosen Rihanna, Donald Trump, Kylie Jenner, K-pop boy band BTS as one of the 25 Most Influential People on the Internet 2018.
TIME evaluated contenders by looking at their global impact on social media and their overall ability to drive news,” wrote the website.
The list appeared on Time’s Twitter handle with the caption, “@BusyPhilipps is on TIME’s list of the 25 Most Influential People on the Internet”.
They’ve already broken at least one of their own U.S. records in 2018, releasing the highest-charting K-pop album ever (Love Yourself: Tear, which debuted atop the Billboard 200).
‘But the real engine behind their success is their passionate social fanbase, who style themselves as the “ARMY” and eagerly consume anything related to the group, from tweets to videos. For example, the YouTube views within 24 hours for their music video Fake Love almost surpassed Taylor Swift’s and Psy’s all-time records—no small feat.’
The magazine sized up contenders for its annual list by looking at their global impact on social media and their overall ability to drive news.
Rihanna‘s impact on social media cannot be overemphasized. When she denounced Snapchat in March for trivializing her domestic violence experience, the company lost a staggering $800 million in value.
Kylie Jenner‘s revelation of daughter Stormi‘s name on Instagram became the most liked photo ever and it secured her spot on the list this year.
The ‘Umbrella’ singer Rihanna made it to the list too, along with YouTubers like Naomi Watanabe and Logan and Jake Paul.
US President Donald Trump is also among the 25 most influential people on the internet due to his presence on the micro-blogging website Twitter.
