World Cup 2018: Dani Alves out of Brazil squad due to knee injury
Brazil have been dealt a further injury blow ahead of the World Cup following news that defender Dani Alves will miss the tournament in Russia.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender was injured on Tuesday in the French Cup final while playing for the winners.
The Brazilian Football Confederation has confirmed in a statement his knee injury makes it “impossible to call Dani Alves for the period of preparation, friendlies and, consequently, the World Cup.”
According to reports, after further tests by the Brazil national team’s doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, it was determined that the former Barcelona star will not recover in time to represent the Selecao at this year’s global soccer fiesta.
“Close examinations confirmed the initial diagnosis of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, requiring surgical treatment,” a statement read.
“Considering the alternative recovery options within the timeframe, it confirmed the impossibility of calling Daniel Alves up for the period of preparation, friendlies and the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Brazil great Pele says he is “so sad” to hear Dani Alves will miss the World Cup finals due to injury.
The 77-year-old legend tweeted “I am so sad to hear this,””Footballers hate missing games but I know first-hand that missing #WorldCup games is the worst feeling.”
