Hip-hop star Cardi B is being sued by her former manager, Klenord “Shaft” Raphael who claims he turned her from an Instagram wannabe to a star and she repaid him by giving him the shaft.
Her manager claims in a new lawsuit that he began working with Cardi B in 2015 and was part of her rise in the music industry, before he was kicked out of the picture.
Claims made against Cardi include “breach of contract, unjust enrichment, quantum meruit, declaratory judgment, and defamation” of her former manager, who works with WorldStar Marketing Group, as a result of Cardi telling others that “Shaft is robbing me.”
Raphael is seeking no less than $10 million in damages, and his lawsuit also names Cardi’s publicist and stylist, Patience Foster, as well as members of her new management team, as defendants, claiming those parties “intentionally interfered” with Cardi’s agreement with WorldStar, thereby depriving them of “substantial income” and other benefits.
The suit further claims that before meeting Shaft, Cardi B had about 100,000 Instagram followers and had not rapped or performed music. Shaft then made Cardi B a “party host,” traveling the country with DJ Self, who Shaft also discovered, which paved the way for her appearance on Love & Hip Hop.
Shaff also blamed Cardi’s makeup artist/ publicist, Patience Foster, for turning the rapper against him.
The suit is seeking “an amount to be determined at trial, but not less than $10,000,000,” according to court documents filed by Shaft and his label KSR and management company WorldStar Marketing Group.
