The National Universities Commission has debunked news making rounds that Nigerian medical students will now spend 11 years to obtain their first degree.
As per them, the newS is mistaken and misdirecting. The NUC’s Head, Information Department, Mrs. Adebukola Olatunji, said in an announcement on Monday that MEDICAL STUDENT will just put in seven years in school, instead of 11 years which was generally reported in the news.
cited to have reported the 11-year preparing period for restorative understudies while giving the keynote address at the registration and introduction of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, on March 12, 2016.
She said no place in the keynote address, entitled, “Improvement of Medical Education in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges,” was 11 years specified or inferred.
As indicated by Olatunji, what Okojie clarified was that the NUC’s fundamental least scholastic standard for Medicine and Surgery had been checked on such that anybody wishing to study Medicine and Surgery and Dentistry will first need to concentrate any of the four-year essential restorative science courses, for example, Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Physiology, before continuing to the clinical preparing that would keep running for a long time.
Punch reports that she said:
“In spite of the fact that, the supposed ’11-year Medical Program’ stories have been credited to the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie’s keynote address, titled, ‘Improvement of Medical Education in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges’, which was conveyed at the Matriculation and Inauguration of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, on Saturday, March 12, 2016, no place in that address was 11 years specified or suggested.
“Prof. Okojie, who was spoken to by the Deputy Executive Secretary l, Prof. Chiedu Mafiana, had clarified that the new educational programs accommodates a consistent seven-year program.
“With the new educational modules, a medicinal understudy would be required to graduate in Basic Medical Sciences, with alternatives in Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Physiology in the initial four years, before continuing for the clinical preparing that would keep running for a long time.”
