The vagina is designed to keep itself clean with the help of natural secretions (discharge). Women have vaginas. Women also have arms and legs and eyes and a nose just like everyone else.
Woman’s smell is about health. Adverse smells are the body’s way of saying “hey, something’s not right.” If something is smelling a little off, it’s probably time to go get things checked out. But for perfectly healthy women who just want to make sure that things are staying up-to-par down there, there are ways to eliminate insecurities and ensure a clean, fresh smell.
What is vagina? The vagina is a tube of muscle inside a woman’s body that runs from the cervix (the opening of the womb) to the vaginal opening. The external sex organs, which are called the vulva, surround the vaginal opening.
“Vaginal discharge is not ‘always a bad sign’There is a myth that copious clear or white discharge is associated with sexually transmitted infections. Changes in the amount of discharge can be 100% hormonal – in other words, linked to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or menopause.” said Dr Elneil.
How to keep vagina healthy
Good vaginal health is maintained by making sure you’re in good general health,”. “This includes a healthy diet and exercise. Normal exercise helps maintain good vaginal function, as walking and running helps the pelvic floor to tone up and ensure good general health.”
1 Shower regularly. Taking at least one shower a day will help to get rid of bacteria that can build up and cause odor in the vagina, just like everywhere else on the body. Depending on your daily routine, washing more than once a day may be necessary. Be sure to shower after a workout to get rid of sweat.
2 WEAR COTTON UNDERWEAR When it comes to your underwear selection, your vagina has a preference: cotton. That’s why most underwear comes with a thin strip of cotton fabric in the crotch. Since it breathes and absorbs moisture, it’s the ideal way to clothe your lady parts, An overly moist environment can cause a build-up of bacteria, so wear underwear that aren’t too tight – preferably cotton. Be sure not to leave the same pair on for more than 24 hours.
3 Use natural soaps. Washing your body with fragrant soaps that contain unnatural ingredients can cause irritation and upset the natural balance of your body. Choose a fragrance-free soap made from natural ingredients to avoid any possible irritation. Do not put soap inside your vagina. It can destroy the vagina’s natural pH, which can cause odors and other problems
4 Do more exercise Doing kegels is crucial for strengthening your pelvic floor muscles, which are key in producing stronger, mind-blowing orgasms—not to mention bladder control. Note to self
5 Wipe correctly. Yes, there is a correct way to wipe after using the bathroom. Wipe from front to back and be careful not to miss anything. Wiping in the opposite direction can sweep bacteria into the vagina and cause an infection.
6 Safer sex by using Condom Some bacteria and viruses can get into the vagina during sex. These include the bugs that cause chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes, genital warts, syphilis and HIV. You can protect your vagina against these infections by using a condom every time you have sex.
Know that sex can change vaginal odor. Any foreign bacteria can change the balance in your vagina, so certain sexual practices can cause an odor, such as allowing semen into the vagina. This change in smell is temporary, but it’s worth being aware of.
7 Eat a healthy diet. Certain foods can alter your body’s balance of sugar, bacteria and chemical compounds. Your diet plays a pretty major role in how things smell down there. Start by eating less sugar. It can spike your blood pressure which can cause a bad odor, and even cause yeast buildup, which can lead to an infection. There is no scientific evidence to back it up, but some swear by pineapple for a sweeter smell.
8 Choose your lube wisely. When buying a lubricant, avoid lubricants with a heavy fragrance, and stick to water- or silicone-based. Be careful with the products you use around your vagina, including lotions.
9 Shave with caution .your pubic hair is there for a reason,Shaving and waxing can result in ingrown hairs, which can be itchy and upset the delicate balance on the skin in the area,” says Alison. “It can also create tiny fissures in the skin, which could allow infection in.””Hair is there to keep things moisturised, protected and happy,” explains Alison. “It helps maintain natural lubrication and acts as a barrier to protect your vulva.”
There’s nothing wrong with keeping things neat, but Alison recommends leaving a little bit of hair, particularly on the labia, to keep things healthy.
10 Have more sex. older women with an active sex life can look five-seven years younger because oestrogen is pumped out during sex, which has a plumping effect on the skin – in fact, women who have sex twice a week have double the oestrogen levels than those who abstain. Plus, you’ll be boosting your serotonin levels, the happy hormone that makes you feel happy.
